Working title

Working title-
How are women represented in TV/print advertising that promotes beauty/cosmetic products?

Angle
The angle that my working title will be focusing on is the females are represented through different media advertisements that are promoting beauty/cosmetic products. I will be doing this by analysing both print and television advertisements. I will be explaining the outcome of how the representation of women has on depending on the sex of the target audience meaning both males and females. My question will most likely attract the female audience as beauty is something that females are more into. I will be talking about different aged females and how the representation of the women in these adverts will affect them. An example of this would be young teenagers and how they see women in these advertisements, example their body image etc. I will be explain how this will effect young females and also how young males will expect women to look a certain way from what they see, this will then give the effect that females will try make themselves look like the females in these advertisement as an example.

Hypothesis
My hypothesis is that females in adverts can have various different effects on the target audiences, as I will be researching about advertisement that promotes beauty/cosmetic products. This will mainly target the female sex; Most TV commercial mostly so stereotype of females. For example females in beauty commercial, this will most likely target the female sex, having the stereotype that they have to have the ideology of being beautiful as well as have a slim figure in order to be able to promote the product that the advertisement it setting out to do. However males may be attracted to certain beauty advertisements for example the females within the advertisements are tall slim beautiful etc, males that end up watching these advertisements will mean that they would expect women to portray this body image in real life.

Linked production piece
Me and the other in my group have decided to produce a rap video for our production. This will link to my investigation as I will be able to talk about how females within the rap video are represented. This will also down as some existing rap videos contain of sexism, as the women within the video are being represented in a sexual object. Within the rap video, our production will contain males the reason for this is by having males this will so the difference between the way males and females are being represented. For example stereotypes of both females and males will have a clear contrast that will reinforce them.
MIGRAIN
Media representation – Trough out advertisements, different genders are being represented in stereotypical ways. Example of this will be females are most likely to be represented by a sexist approach, by doing this with advertisement it means that they link with the mainstream ideology. This is most likely to happen through advertisements, more so when products are being advertised for example make up cosmetics relating to the females gender.
The representation of women through these advertises are for what the target audience want to see. For example the way females are represented within these advertisement shows them being portrayed as a beauty figure this will be due to the fact that the models will stereotypical have tall slim body image, this then represents females a sex objectives. For example advertisement that represents males, these will stereotypically to do with male grooming products. Examples of this would be deodorants as males are portrayed in a unhygienic way therefore grooming products will create awareness for males in order to attract them to certain things such as deodorants.
Narrative – Within television commercial there is a narrative. The narrative that is shown in these commercials will show genders in different ways. For example the representation of the characters may depend on the product that is being represented in the commercial.
With the commercial whatever the audience are shown for example, commercials that promoting make up products the females within these advertisement are shown as not having imperfection on their skin. This goes with the stereotype that females have great skin and using make will enhance their features.
Media audience – Within television commercials, these texts are aimed at certain audiences. This is done for example certain things will attract different people this will depend on the product that the commercial is promoting. Also other things that will commercial is the time that the commercials is being played.
Example of commercial that may offend target audience may be for example commercials where females are within the kitchen. This may offend some women as they may feel as though they are being stereotyped as house wives.

Genre – Advertisement according to the products that is being promoted within them. For example males will be attracted to car commercials and females will most likely to be attracted to make up and cosmetic related commercials

Issues and debates

Representation and stereotypes – My question is how are women represented in TV/print advertising that promotes beauty/cosmetic products? This questions will link with many different things for example sexism, and if the representation of them is a positive or negative impact

Gender and ethnicity – Within TV commercials the ethnicity of the models are most likely to be white. However there may some commercials where a make product for example foundation where it’s used on the skin. These commercial may use darker skin models in order to product the their product and the wide range of colours they  in the foundation.
